The
foreign investment climate in Ethiopia has exploded as these "dirt-cheap deals” are being offered at unheard of prices. Ethiopia alone has approved 815 foreign-financed agricultural projects since 2007. Why in the world would a government sell off its land and natural resources, much of which will be exported, especially being a beggar nation like Ethiopia that feeds many of its people with food grown in foreign countries? It defies common sense, which makes it all the more dangerous. Virgin forests are being cleared in order to make the land ready for these new large-scale "foreign farms.” These land grabs are a new form of neo-colonialism that leaves large parts of Africa in the hands of foreign states and investors while displaced local populations are left to suffer and go hungry.
