ETHIOPIANS IN THE SUDAN FACING DANGER Andualem Alemayehu, an Ehiopian who had been expressing, over the Eritrean Television, his disapproval of the Meles Zenawi regime is presently in the central prison of Khartoum awaiting possible deportation. Andualem had returned to the Sudan from Asmara and agents of Meles had him arrested by the Sudanese security police. In Damazien town where violent clashes have taken place between rebels and the Beshir government Ethiopian residents and refugees have been beaten and jailed en masse by the Sudanese army and police. The frustrated soldiers have gone on a vengeance spree on Ethiopians though the conflict does not concern them in any way. In Damazien, Gedaref, Khartoum, Hasasaisa and Basonda—the number of Ethiopian refugees cast into jails has increased. In the meanwhile, armed clashes have been reported from Quara between armed groups and Sudanese soldiers who have occupied Ethiopian territory. The spread of what the Meles regime wants to call ordinary shifta or bandit activity and the increasing clashes between these armed groups and the Meles soldiers has led to the increase of the number of people fleeing from Quara and Armacheho regions into the Sudan.
